When bought this trailer sailer in about 2000 its home was Port Vincent,South Australia. It was built in the late 70’s orearly 80’s to Hartley specifications and materials, that is, timber andplywood. was able to sail it straight away but later found some dry rot where the hull meets the deck and in small localized patches in some of the inner frames. The next bad thing was rust inthe steel center-plate which caused it to jam sometimes when being raised orlowered. Since then the boat has been an ongoing family project. The dry rot was dug out and 20 mm thick plywood bulwark was fitted around theentire boat. It extends above deck level by 70 mm all round and is littlehigher towards the bow. The dry-rot cavities were filled with epoxyfiberglass “mulch” then the entire deck was stripped back to raw plywood andalso fiber-glassed, using fairly heavy grade of cloth. The hull-to-deck joinis probably stronger now than it was originally and completely water-proof!Sand was added to the final gel coat to make it non-slip and an oxide pigmentso UV rays cannot penetrate! The patches of dry rot in the frames were also dugout and reinforced with epoxy mulch. The original deck plan wasaltered by adding king post and short bowsprit. Strictlyspeaking, the boat is no longer Hartley 21. The bowsprit gives the boat fore-staysinstead of 1, more versatile sail configuration and better anchor-management. These modifications have slightly increased the weight and raised the center-of-gravityso to compensate replaced the original (rusty) steel center-plate with athicker one (12 mm), galvanized. Getting the old one out and the new onein was big job! I’ve sailed the boat few times since then and the new center-plate works well with 5-1 pulley system which is operated from inside the cabin. alwaysthrow couple of small sand bags into the bilge area too, for good measure.Needless to say, this Hartley 21 is not going to win races anymore but it’sgreat for pottering around in bays and rivers and it easily makes 3-4 knots inan average breeze. As for the cabin, the main sliding hatch has been re-builtand the front “portholes” have been replaced with thicker Perspex. The only remaining patch of dry rot is in cabin roof itself, near theforward port corner. It's about the size of your hand. Very accessible hour job. The whole cabin top could eventually be fiber-glassed butoverall, it’s very solid. As for the rigging, some has been replaced and newchain-plates were fitted to port and starboard. With fore-stays and side-stays(2 on each side), it’s unlikely the boat will ever be dis-masted! All the staysare stainless steel and of heavier gauge than necessary in my opinion. There’s also fully working pulley system for raising and lowering the mastsingle handed, on or off the water, using jib pole which stows against themast when not being used. This is great for getting under low bridges in riverestuaries! There are mainsails and jibs, all usable. The boat isalso equipped with ropes and cords necessary for sailing, including 1small drum winch for the jib. The mast and boom are both aluminium. The rudder and tiller are fiber-glass and wood. There are more than enough safety vests and some in-built buoyancyunits have been fitted in case of capsize. For ground tackle there’s an anchor, about metres of chain and some anchor rope. few recent electrical improvements have been made. New interior LED lightsand wiring, solar power controller and switch/fuse panel have been installed bya professional marine electrician. For cooking there’s working twin-burnermeth-fuel stove. There are full length bunks and chemical-type toilet. There is space to mount an outboard motor on bracket alongside the rudder. The trailer is years old and has been hosed down after each use. I’ve successfullylaunched and retrieved the boat several times from public boat ramps. It’s hassle-free once you're familiar with some steps which I'm happy to go through if the new owner wants. 4WD vehicle is an advantage as the boat weighs around 1tonne. The trailer is registered until February 2017 and costs $175 p/a withannual RTA inspections required. I've had no issues with getting it registered each year.I’'m sorry to be letting this boat go but I’m not getting any younger and the family has grown up andleft home now! There’s still lot of fun left in it. It's ready for the water and there's nothing important to be done. Pick up and tow away from Croydon, inner western Sydney. Inspectionswelcome by arrangement. Best times are weekdays before 3pm. Happy bidding! No reserve price! Paul
